Michael A. Oberlander, M.D.
Dr. Oberlander was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Boston University in 1990. He subsequently completed a one year fellowship in Sports Medicine at the renowned Hughston Sports Medicine Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. Dr. Oberlander relocated to the East Bay region of San Francisco where he has remained in practice since 1991. Drs. Oberlander and Merson departed their prior practice and founded East Bay Sports Medicine in1997.

Dr. Oberlander is extremely active in treating the full gamut of orthopaedic sports related injuries with special expertise in knee and shoulder disorders. He is the Head Team Physician for the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS), was the Head Team Physician for the former San Francisco Dragons (MLL) and is an Assistant Team Physician for the USA National Rugby Team, “Eagles.” He serves as the Head Team Physician for the Diablo Valley Athletics and served as Team Physician for the XFL San Francisco Demons as well as for numerous local high schools and club sports teams. Dr. Oberlander is a longstanding member of the editorial board for The American Journal of Sports Medicine and the American Journal of Orthopaedics. Dr. Oberlander is an editorial reviewer and past board member for Arthroscopy: The Journal of Athroscopic and Related Surgery. He has published numerous peer review articles and book chapters and has lectured nationally and internationally on topics related to the knee and shoulder. Dr. Oberlander is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, The Arthroscopy Association of North America, and The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
